Insider Tip

Pair Similajau National Park with Tanjung Batu beach on the return: 45 minutes north, a morning trail walk, a lunch stop at a Kidurong kopitiam on the drive back, then an afternoon swim at Tanjung Batu. One Grab return at RM90 to RM120 covers the whole day.

Similajau National Park: The Default Choice

Best Day Trips from Bintulu

Similajau National Park is the most popular day trip from Bintulu for a reason. It is 30 kilometres northeast on the coastal trunk road, 35 to 45 minutes by Grab at RM45 to RM60 one way. Park entry is RM20 for foreign adults, RM10 for Malaysians. The Main Trail to Turtle Beach is 3.5 km and takes 90 minutes one way through rainforest onto empty sand.

Most visitors see silver-leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques and at least a handful of rhinoceros hornbills. Green turtles nest on Golden Beach further along between June and September. Saltwater crocodiles live in the rivers, so stay out of the Likau and Sebubong. For full trail-by-trail detail see our Similajau guide.

Kampung Jepak: Half a Day Across the River

Kampung Jepak is a traditional Melanau fishing village directly across the Kemena River from Pasar Utama. The sampan crossing costs RM1 each way and takes 5 minutes. You arrive in a village of stilt houses built over the water, with sago processing in small workshops, fresh fish landed most mornings and a small village market.

Go early, ideally by 8am when the fishing boats are returning. Two to three hours is enough to walk the boardwalks, stop at a kopitiam for a sago snack and coffee, and watch sago being processed if you time it right. Keep small notes because nothing takes card. It is the cheapest and most authentic half-day in Bintulu.

Niah Caves: A Long Archaeological Day

Niah National Park is 130 km northeast along the Pan Borneo Highway, roughly 2 hours by car each way. A private driver for the day runs RM350 to RM450 split between 3 or 4 people. The park is home to the Great Cave, one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia where human remains dating back 40,000 years were found, and the Painted Cave with prehistoric wall art.

The Great Cave boardwalk runs about 3 km from park headquarters and takes 45 minutes one way. Allow 4 to 5 hours on the ground. It is a tight day trip of 10 to 11 hours door to door but very doable with a 6am start. For park booking and cave access, book through Sarawak Forestry.

Mukah: Melanau Coastal Town

Mukah is a Melanau fishing and sago town 155 km southwest of Bintulu, about 2 hours by car on the coastal road. It is quieter than Bintulu, less developed and more obviously Melanau, with stilt villages, sago factories, umai raw fish salad as a specialty and the Kaul Festival in April.

As a day trip Mukah works if you set off by 7am and head back by 4pm, giving you 5 hours on the ground. Stop at the Lamin Dana cultural centre and the central market. Outside the Kaul Festival it is a slow, peaceful town. A private driver for the day runs RM400 to RM500. Worth it if you are interested in Melanau culture; otherwise skip and spend the day at Similajau.

Lambir Hills: Waterfalls and Record Biodiversity

Lambir Hills National Park is 165 km northeast, just south of Miri and about 2.5 hours by car. The park is famous for holding the world record for plant diversity in a single 52 hectare plot and for the Latak Waterfall with a swimming pool at its base. Park entry is RM20 for foreign adults.

As a day trip it is a long drive for 3 to 4 hours on the ground, but the Latak Trail is short at 20 minutes each way and the waterfall pool is a genuine highlight. A private driver runs RM400 to RM500 for the day. Consider combining Lambir with Niah and an overnight in Miri to spread the driving.

Miri: The Nearest Real City

Miri is the nearest city of any real size at 200 km north, 2.5 to 3 hours by car on the Pan Borneo Highway. Public buses with Biaramas and MTC run hourly from Bintulu Medan Jaya bus terminal at RM30 to RM40 one way. As a day trip it is tight but doable: 8am out, 4pm back, giving you 5 hours in Miri.

Miri has better shopping, a broader restaurant scene, the Miri Handicraft Centre and a ferry access point for Brunei. Most travellers stretch the trip to an overnight. Planning a Day Trip Budget

A Grab return to Similajau with wait time runs RM90 to RM120. A private driver with sedan for Niah, Mukah or Lambir for the day is RM350 to RM500 split 3 or 4 ways. Hotel concierge group tours to Similajau through Parkcity Everly or Riverfront Hotel run RM150 to RM250 per person including transport, guide and park entry.

Book private drivers through hotel reception or WhatsApp groups rather than through agent offices; you avoid a 15 to 25 percent markup. Confirm the price, vehicle and wait time in writing the day before. For day trip timing with monsoon awareness see the best time to visit guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular day trip from Bintulu?

Similajau National Park at 30 km north is the default choice: 45 minutes by Grab, beach trails, hornbills and a genuine rainforest feel. It is a comfortable half-day or relaxed full-day trip. Entry is RM20 for foreigners at the park gate.

Can I do Niah Caves as a day trip?

Niah National Park and its archaeological caves are 130 km northeast, roughly 2 hours each way by car on the coastal trunk road. It is doable as a long day trip but tight; allow 10 to 11 hours door to door. A private driver for the day runs RM350 to RM450.

How far is Miri from Bintulu?

Miri is 200 km north, 2.5 to 3 hours by car on the Pan Borneo Highway. Public buses with Biaramas and MTC run hourly from Bintulu Medan Jaya bus terminal for RM30 to RM40. It works better as a 2 day side trip than a day trip given driving time.

Is Mukah worth a day trip?

Mukah is a Melanau coastal town 155 km southwest, about 2 hours by car. It is known for sago production, umai raw fish salad and the Kaul Festival in April. A day trip is feasible with 4 to 5 hours on the ground but it is a long drive for a quiet town.

Can I visit Kampung Jepak as a day trip?

Kampung Jepak is effectively a half-day trip from Bintulu town: a RM1 sampan crossing across the Kemena River, 2 to 3 hours wandering stilt houses, sago processing and the village market, and back. Go in the morning when the fish market is active.

What about Lambir Hills National Park?

Lambir Hills is 165 km northeast, just south of Miri, and is famous for record plant diversity and the Latak Waterfall. A 3 hour drive each way makes it a long day but achievable with an early start. Combine with Niah if you can stretch to an overnight in Miri.

How much does a day trip cost?

A Grab return to Similajau runs RM90 to RM120 including wait time. A private car with driver for Niah or Mukah is RM350 to RM500 for the day. Group day tours through Parkcity Everly or Riverfront Hotel concierges run RM150 to RM250 per person for Similajau.

Do I need a guide for day trips?

Not for Similajau, Kampung Jepak or Taman Tumbina where trails and routes are self-explanatory. For Niah Caves the Great Cave boardwalk is clear but a guide at RM60 to RM100 makes the Painted Cave more meaningful. For Mukah, local knowledge helps with the sago villages.
