Bintulu is a town and the capital of Bintulu District in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is located about 260 kilometres (160 miles) northeast from Kuching, on the coast of the South China Sea, and near the mouth of theRejang River. The town covers an area of 151 square kilometres (58 square miles). Bintulu is the largest town in terms of population and size in Sarawak’s Samalaju Industrial Park.

Bintulu was founded in 1857 by a group of Bugis settlers from Sulawesi led by Pateh Assan Ali. Originally known as Telok Masli, it was renamed Bintulu in 1927. The town began to grow rapidly only after the discovery of oil and gas in the 1960s.

Bintulu is now a modern and vibrant town, with a population of over 200,000 people. It is the economic centre of Sarawak’s central region. The town is home to several large industries, including an oil and gas liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, a steel mill, and a fertiliser factory.

Bintulu is well-connected to the rest of Sarawak and Malaysia by air, land, and sea. It is served by Bintulu Airport and has regular ferry services to Labuan and Brunei.

Despite its rapid development, Bintulu has managed to retain its small-town charm. Visitors can still find traditional longhouses and Orang Ulu villages in the surrounding areas. The town is also a gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gunung Mulu National Park.
